Dermaplaning Frequently Asked Questions Answered
How Often Should I Get Treatment?
You should get dermaplaning done every three to four weeks depending on your lifestyle and aesthetic goals. When you come in for your initial consultation, we will work with you to identify the most appropriate schedule for your needs.
How Long Does Treatment Take?
During your initial consultation, we will assess the extent of the results you’re looking for to determine how long you should expect your treatment to take. Typically, a treatment session will take around half of an hour if only your face is being treated. If you’d like to target your face, the underside of your chin, and the sides of your neck, your session may take closer to 45 minutes.
What Results Can I Expect?
Immediately after treatment, you can expect your skin to look and feel refreshed, rejuvenated, and flawlessly smooth. You will also see that the tone of your skin is brighter and more even, boosting your mood and self-esteem. Furthermore, after your very first treatment, you will notice that your acne scars are significantly less noticeable. However, you may need two or three sessions to remove acne scars completely.
Can This Treatment Reduce the Frequency of Acne Breakouts?
Maybe. One of the secondary benefits of this treatment is that it unclogs pores. While clogged pores rarely lead to acne breakouts directly, they certainly make acne medication virtually ineffective. If you use a topical acne medication that doesn’t seem to work, you may find that it works once your pores become unclogged after treatment. Therefore, you may see less frequent acne breakouts.
Will This Treatment Cause My Vellus Hairs to Grow Back Thicker and Darker?
This is an incredibly common misconception, but it is a misconception nonetheless. Neither dermaplaning nor shaving your vellus hairs will cause them to grow back darker or thicker. Furthermore, it is impossible for any hair removal treatment to make hairs grow back faster. Your hair color is determined by genetics, and the thickness and growth rate of your hair is determined by your health and the length of time your hair spends in its growth phase.
How Does Treatment Work?
The treatment works by gently dragging a 10-gauge scalpel held at a 45-degree angle against skin that is held taut. This exfoliates the top superficial layers of dead skin cells that are the reason your skin looks ruddy, dull, discolored, or damaged.
By the end of your session, the middle layers of your skin are exposed. These cells have never been exposed to pollutants or sunlight before, so they look fresh, young, healthy, and beautiful. The other primary thing accomplished by exfoliating the skin with a medical-grade scalpel is vellus hairs, also known as peach fuzz, are removed.
If you have any other cosmetic concerns, like acne scars, let us know during your initial consultation. There is a good chance that this rejuvenating treatment can help. There’s an even better chance that you can achieve these goals in just one day if you combine treatment with a peel.
How Should I Prepare for Treatment?
To prepare for treatment, we strongly encourage you to come in without any cosmetics on your face, including moisturizers and makeup. If you come in with makeup on, we will have to remove it before we sanitize the treatment area. The only thing you really must do to prepare for treatment is to avoid manual or chemical exfoliation for three to five days before your scheduled session.
What Recovery Time Can I Expect?
We all want to perfect our appearance without having to buy expensive, moderately effective makeup and applying it every day. With dermaplaning, your skin will be flawlessly smooth and radiant without needing to apply makeup and you can go straight back to work after the treatment. There is no recovery period and no downtime whatsoever.
Am I a Good Candidate for This Treatment?
Probably. To determine if you are a good candidate for this treatment, you must come in for an initial consultation. While this non-invasive treatment is perfect for any skin type, if you have oily skin, you may be unable to receive treatment right away. People with oily skin often suffer from acne breakouts and nobody with an active acne breakout should receive this treatment.
Furthermore, individuals who have very sensitive, thin skin should not receive a chemical peel within a couple of weeks of this treatment. This treatment alone already removes between two and three weeks’ worth of dead skin cells. If you have sensitive, thin skin and follow treatment up with a chemical peel, you may have too much skin removed.
